You can protect your children from lead poisoning

  1. Don’t let children put dirt or paint chips in their mouths. Don’t let them play around chipping paint inside or outside the house.

  2. Wash children’s hands before they eat or sleep.

  3. Wash toys and stuffed animals weekly. Wash bottles and pacifiers as soon as they fall on the floor.

  4. Don’t let children keep toys on windowsills. Clean windowsills weekly.

  5. Keep paint in good shape. If you rent, tell your landlord about chipping or peeling paint.

  6. Don’t sand or scrape paint in old homes. You could make lead dust that poisons children.

  7. Take off your shoes before coming into the house, and keep floors mopped.

  8. Make sure children eat nutritious, low-fat meals. Children with a good diet absorb less lead.

  9. Get your children under six years old tested for lead poisoning.
